Drywall seems like one of the easiest parts of a home renovation. However, the reality is that there are a lot of things that can go wrong with the drywall. Unfortunately, small mistakes could dramatically hurt your budget. If you are planning to drywall your home, here is what you need to know. 

What Should You Do? 

To make the job of installing drywall less frustrating, there are a few things that you should do. For instance, instead of opting for a plastic pan for the mudding, opt for a metal pan. A metal pan is more expensive, but it is easier to clean and the mudding will be smoother without the presence of dried up chunks of mud from the pan.  

Another thing you should do is realize that there is a possibility that some of the studs will be warped. A warped stud is not cause for panic. It does require a bit more work to get the drywall perfect, though. You will need to sand or shave the bowed stud so that it does not push the drywall out into a curve that will be difficult to make work with the other sheets.  

After you have placed the drywall screws in the sheets, you have to be careful about placing a coat of mud over them. If the mud is not smoothed correctly, it can bubble up and leave your wall with small bumps along it. The mud needs to be applied going in one direction and then wiped in the opposite direction.  

What If You Need to Repair a Section? 

It is possible for you to reach the end of the drywalling project and discover that you have to repair part of it. Accidents happen all the time in renovations. In most instances, you do not have to take down the entire sheet to repair the damaged section.  

Before you do anything, you need to know where the electrical wiring is behind the wall. You do not want to cut the cords. You can use a flashlight to peep through a hole in the damaged wall. If you have to cut in a hole or enlarge one, try not to go wider than an inch at a time.  

When it is time to apply the mud, keep it light. With a light coating, it will be easier to sand and it will be less likely that the patched section will stand out from the rest of the drywall.
